Aretha Franklin, the singer known as the Queen of Soul Music, died Thursday at the age of 76 after an illness. Franklin died at her home in Detroit, Michigan.
“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we can not find the right words to express the pain in our hearts,” Franklin’s family told AP. “We lost the mother and the foundation of our family, her love for her children, her grandchildren, her nieces, nephews and cousins knew no boundaries.”
She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but grew up in Detroit. Her father was a Baptist minister, and she began singing in the church when she was a child. She sings in soul, r & bl, jazz, blues and gospel styles. Among her best-known songs were “I Say a Little Prayer” “Respect” and “Chain of Fools”. In addition, she played the Penster and wrote songs herself.
Franklin faced health problems that prevented her from appearing in recent months. Last March she canceled two planned appearances for what her managers called “doctor’s instructions.” Later, she canceled more performances in Boston and Toronto, again because the doctors ordered her to rest.
In one of her last performances, in June 2017, she performed in her hometown of Detroit, with the words “God bless you and keep you, remind me of your prayers.”
